SpamBayes Setup
SpamBayes is a program that is installed in conjunction with Microsoft Outlook (not Outlook Express, Microsoft has tools for converting from Outlook Express to Outlook, click here for help with this) to help control the flow of spam e-mail. SpamBayes filters your incoming e-mail in to either a spam folder, an unsure folder, or a known good folder (usually your inbox). To use SpamBayes, you simply download the program for free from:SpamBayes Download
After that is downloaded, follow these intructions to install and configure the program:
1. Open the install program. It should look like this:

2. Click on next, which will take you to the next screen, like this:

3. Make sure that the Microsoft Outlook Addin is checked. You also have the option for other POP based clients, if that is your situation. Click next, and the screen will appear like this:

4. Choose the directory that you want the program to be installed in to, or leave the default. Click next, and this screen will show up:

5. Accept the default start menu folder, or create one of your own, and click on next. This screen is next:

6. Check to make sure all your options look right, and click on install. After the install program runs, the screen will appear like this:

7. If you leave the "View welcome.html" checked, you will be directed to a welcome page that gives you a brief description of how SpamBayes works. Otherwise, you won't see it. Either way, click finish to exit the installation program.
8. Now open up your Microsoft Outlook. When you do this, there will be a short delay as the newly installed SpamBayes program loads. You will be directed to a setup screen, which looks much like this:

9. Leave the default "I haven't prepared for SpamBayes at all." option checked. This just means that you are starting from scratch, which is the best way for SpamBayes to learn which e-mails are spam. Click next, and this screen shows up:

10. Again, leave the default option. This just means that you are not going to train SpamBayes from the beginning, but let it train itself as you go along. This is the best way to get the most accurate e-mail filtering in to your inbox. Click next, and this screen appears:

11. On this screen, ensure that your incoming mail folder is selected here. Usually the program will default to your inbox, since most setups have their e-mail go there. If you have changed where your e-mail goes to, click browse, and select the appropriate folder. Click next, and see this screen:

12. This screen is important! DO NOT DELETE THESE FOLDERS! These are the folders that your e-mail will be filtered in to. If you delete either of these folders, the SpamBayes program will become unstable, and cease to work. We recommend leaving the default names, so you can easily understand what is in each folder. When you have made your choices for the names of the two folders, click next, and see this screen:

13. You have now completed the set up for SpamBayes. Click on finish to have SpamBayes begin filtering your mail. SpamBayes will begin by moving all unread e-mail into the Junk Suspects folder that you created in step 12. This may take a few moments of processing, so be patient. Once all the unread mail is processed in to the Junk Suspects folder, go to that folder and begin telling SpamBayes what to do with each piece of e-mail.
14. At the top of the screen, you will see some icons, like this:
As you click on each piece of e-mail in the Junk Suspects folder, do not physically delete the e-mail. Choose one of these two icons for each piece of e-mail in the Junk Suspects folder. If the e-mail is good, and you want further e-mails like it to enter your inbox, click this icon: This will move that piece of e-mail back to your inbox, and remember it for further processing decisions on future e-mails.
If the e-mail is junk, and you do not want to see further pieces of e-mail like it, click on this icon: This will move that piece of e-mail to the Junk E-Mail folder, and will remember it for future processing of e-mails.
15. Continue processing all the e-mails that enter the Junk Suspects folder. After about 5-10 days, SpamBayes will become quite accurate at moving good e-mail automatically to the inbox, and junk e-mail automatically to the Junk E-mail folder.
16. SpamBayes is not perfect. It uses information that you have provided it to make educated decisions about e-mails that it has never seen before. Because of this, a few e-mails will get routed to the incorrect spot. Continue to check your Junk E-Mail folder for good e-mails. If you find any, merely highlite the e-mail, and click the "Recover from Spam" icon to move it to your inbox. After two or three e-mails have been recovered, SpamBayes should remember that you want that e-mail. Likewise, some junk e-mails can slip in to your inbox. Highlite that e-mail, and click "Delete as Spam" icon. That will move it to the Junk E-Mail folder. Additionally, monitor the Junk Suspects folder for any e-mails that you may have to process. If you start missing e-mails that you should be getting, check your Junk Suspects, and Junk E-mail folders.
17. You can delete the e-mails in the Junk E-mail folder, but DO NOT delete the folder itself.
18. You may have to check the configuration of SpamBayes at some point. If you do, simply click the drop arrow next to the SpamBayes word, near the "Recover from Spam" or "Delete as Spam" icons. In that menu, click SpamBayes manager, which will give you a screen like this:

This tells you whether SpamBayes is enabled (turn it off if you want ALL e-mails to go to your inbox) and what folders your e-mails are being filtered to. If you ever accidentally delete one of the folders that SpamBayes filters e-mail in to, click the Configuration Wizard, and complete steps 9 - 13 again.
